The Estlow Lecture series and the Anvil of Freedom Award were created to offer recognition and honor to individuals whose careers demonstrate true leadership and commitment to
democratic freedoms, ethics and integrity. Past honorees include David Broder, Katharine Graham, Al Neuharth and Helen Thomas.
The Estlow Lecture is an annual event started in 1993. The Anvil
of Freedom award originated in 1997. The award is given to the
Estlow Lecturer in recognition of his or her superior leadership
and commitment to protection of the First Amendment.
As the Estlow Center aids in the advancement of journalistic
excellence, we look to honor those who excel in this area. The
Anvil of Freedom Award is one way we recognize those who work
to see journalism reach and maintain the highest standards.
