Previous Anvil of Freedom Honorees include:

The Estlow Lecture series and the Anvil of Freedom Award were created to offer recognition and honor to individuals whose careers demonstrate true leadership and commitment to
democratic freedoms, ethics and integrity. Past honorees include David Broder, Katharine Graham, Al Neuharth and Helen Thomas.

The Estlow Lecture is an annual event started in 1993. The Anvil
of Freedom award originated in 1997. The award is given to the
Estlow Lecturer in recognition of his or her superior leadership
and commitment to protection of the First Amendment.
As the Estlow Center aids in the advancement of journalistic
excellence, we look to honor those who excel in this area. The
Anvil of Freedom Award is one way we recognize those who work
to see journalism reach and maintain the highest standards

2005-2006: Bob Schieffer

Bob Schieffer, interim anchor of "The CBS Evening News", will receive the Anvil of Freedom Award and deliver the Estlow Lecture during the School of Communication Summit dinner starting at 6 p.m on March 1 at the The Cable Center on the University of Denver Campus, 2000 E. Buchtel Ave.

 

 

 


2004-2005: Linda Greenhouse

Linda Greenhouse, the 1998 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for beat reporting and author of the biography "Becoming Justice Blackmun."

Greenhouse received the Anvil of Freedom Award and delivered the Estlow Lecture on May 4, 2005 .

 

 

 

 


2003-2004: Floyd Abrams

Floyd Abrams , prominent First Amendment attorney.

About 200 students, faculty and community members attended Abrams ' lecture on Monday, April 26, 2004 in the Newman Performing Arts Center on the University of Denver campus.

The lecture was titled "The Bush Administration and the First Amendment."

 

 


2001-2002: Geneva Overholser

Geneva Overholser  giving her speech entitled “What Good is Journalism”.Geneva Overholser, Pulitzer-prize winning editor for the DesMoines Register, syndicated journalist and Stanley Foundation trustee.

Overholser received the 2001 Anvil of Freedom Award on October 22, 2001 at the University of Denver. Overholser accepted the award presented by Edward W. Estlow and gave a speech entitled “What Good is Journalism”.

2000-2001: Katharine Graham

Helen Thomas

Helen Thomas, columnist, correspondent and White House bureau chief for United Press International Helen Thomas received the 1998-1999 Anvil of Freedom award. She presented the Estlow Lecture on October 15, 1998.

David S. Broder David S. Broder, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, national political writer for The Washington Post
David S. Broder accepted the 1996-1997 Anvil of Freedom award and provided the Estlow Lecture on April 2, 1997.

Edward W. Estlow Lecturers


The Estlow Lecture is an annual event started in 1992 by Jean Otto, former Estlow Chair of Professional Journalism in the School of Communication at the University of Denver and Edward W. Estlow, a distinguished DU alumnus and retired president of Scripps Howard. The event culminates with a speech on the University of Denver campus by a noteworthy national leader.

Distinguished First Amendment attorney, broadcaster, prosecutor, former General Counsel - United States Information Agency


1993-1994: Michael Gartner

Former editor of the Chicago Tribune.
